18 Miles + Super Bowl Fun

I decided to do my long run on Friday this week – we had a bunch of things we had planned for the weekend and I didn’t want to dedicate 2.5+ hours Saturday or Sunday morning to a long run.  Some weeks I can totally pysch myself up to run in the freezing cold.  Other weeks, I have no motivation and will happily log the miles on the treadmill.  This was definitely a treadmill week (I haven’t run outside since my frigid 10k last weekend).

I woke up at 4:30am Friday morning in order to be finished running, showered, and out the door by 8:30 with my oldest son.  He is in a 75-min “class” at the YMCA (where we have a membership).  I love the class – he gets to interact with other kids his age in a classroom environment and I get to spend some one-on-one time with him (my mom comes over to watch my youngest son). I spent the rest of the day with the boys at my mom’s house (while our family room / kitchen were getting painted).  She makes the best pizza.  Ever.  Learning to make pizza is a must in my family:

The finished product…have you ever seen anything so beautiful?

The long run went great.  Really great, actually.  I started off slow and gradually picked up the pace.  I love running on the treadmill because I can completely control my pace.  I felt comfortable when I was running between 7:48-7:52 and most of my miles ended up falling into this range.  (I always try to make my last two miles the fastest of the day.)

  • Mile 1: 8:33
  • Mile 2: 8:09
  • Mile 3: 8:03
  • Mile 4: 7:57
  • Mile 5: 7:56
  • Mile 6: 7:50
  • Mile 7: 7:49
  • Mile 8: 7:49
  • Mile 9: 7:50
  • Mile 10: 7:45
  • Mile 11: 7:52
  • Mile 12: 7:49
  • Mile 13: 7:48
  • Mile 14: 7:49
  • Mile 15: 7:48
  • Mile 16: 7:45
  • Mile 17: 7:29
  • Mile 18: 7:17
  • Total Time: 2:21:18
  • Pace: 7:51

I had plans to do an easy 7-8 mi recovery run on Saturday, but woke up and my left ankle just seemed off.  I got on the treadmill while my oldest son was napping but I still didn’t like the way it felt, so I decided to make it an unplanned rest day.

I spent a good portion of the day reorganizing our kitchen cabinets.  Now that we’ve been living here for a period of time (8 months), I have a much better sense of which cabinets I use and where I want things.  But once I start cleaning or organizing, I have this horrible problem of not being able to stop.  So what started as plans to clean/organize a few cabinets, ended up being the whole kitchen, then spilling over into the side entry closets, and then into the dining room.

I did 10 miles on the treadmill on Sunday afternoon – it was a few mile repeats in the middle of a tempo run.  And was one of the best runs I’ve ever had (I’ll go into detail in tomorrow’s post).

We spent Superbowl Sunday over my older sister’s home.  Her basement has a media room which is A-MAZING.

I love whenever we are all together.  My oldest son and niece are really starting to play so well together

We came home at halftime. Little guy was already out for the count and it was way past our oldest son’s bedtime.

I was really surprised it turned out to be such a close game after it looked like it was gong to be a blowout.

Did you watch the Superbowl?  What was your favorite commercial?  I missed a bunch in the first half because both boys were up, but saw this one and LOVED it:

Long runs on a treadmill?  Love them

Did you participate in the #MilesofShame Contest?  Do you have to run this week? Yes and no miles since I was going for the Ravens!

    3. I work at a VA hospital and LOVED the Jeep commercial. I was definitely in tears by the end. Cheers to you (and all) veterans.

And 18 miles on a treadmill – Cheers to that, too! :)

      • I was hysterical – my mom and sisters were sobbing. I think it really hits home when you are around those who deploy.
Thanks so much, Becky! I’m always happiest when it’s over b/c I know I have 7 more days until I have another one to do =)

      • Hero or slightly crazy friend? HA =) I thought it was going to be much higher judging by how the first half was going!!! =) Hope you had a great weekend!!!!

      • Meghan, I DVR my favorite shows from the week and save them for the run – this week was Grey’s, Top Chef, and RHOBH (my guilty pleasure). It’s enough to last me my run!! Some days I feel like I need music too so I’ll listen to music and read the captions on the TV. Other days I just watch TV !!
And I only focus on one mile at a time….I think about how many more minutes / tenths of a mile left until I’m finished with that one mile…

    4. I did seven miles on the treadmill this week and with no distraction of a TV it was pretty brutal. But when I was marathon training, I had no problem doing ten miles on the TM so I think it’s just a matter of retraining my brain to deal with it :)

Nice job on the 18 miles!

    5. Great job on your run Michele!! I’m so impressed that you are able to run that many miles on the treadmill. I struggle with 5 on the treadmill! I missed that commercial last night so thank you for sharing it here. That game was pretty incredible. I almost woke up the kids with my screaming at the end. So close! Yes, I have to run 3 miles this week. Thank GOD it’s not 20. haha

      • I was so happy it wasn’t a blowout. I mean, you want your team to win, but it’s always so much better when it’s a good game, you know?
Thanks, Christine! I just think about one mile at a time. But honestly, some days, 5-6 seem like a ton…some days they fly by.

    6. I just re-organized and purged my kitchen as well, I feel the same way, once I start I can’t stop! ha I did the garage and the kids rooms this weekend. The Goodwill knows us by name after this weekend. Your Mom’s pizza looks unreal! I want! right now! Have a great week!

    7. What a great long run, and after waking up at 4:30am! I have a hard time motivating myself early in the morning, but it feels so awesome when the runs is over.

Aaaand I would like to eat that pizza for breakfast. Holy yum.

      • I don’t think I would have gotten up that early if it wasn’t that it was my only chance that day to run. I knew my time was super tight (I finished at 8 and had to be out of the house by 830) so there was almost no wiggle room!!!
I’ve tried to make the pizza like she does – but honestly, it never comes even close to what hers tastes like!

    8. Awesome job! My treadmill pr is 10 miles, and it wasn’t so bad with a little reading on the nook and music. I am more of a winter runner so I don’t mind the cold! It’s a blessing but summer time is the worst for me!

      • I am in awe of people who can read while running on the treadmill! I think I would end up falling off and getting dizzy =) I am the total opposite of you! Give me heat and humidity every day of the week! LOL

    9. I had the superbowl on but pretty much missed everything. I had a really fussy son last night. I really liked the jeep commerical. I particapated in the #MilesofShame and I do not have to run. I was betting on the Ravens.

      • HA. It’s funny! I missed SO many commercials too! I caught the halftime ones b/c #2 was sleeping and my husband was with #1! I didn’t even know what the score of the game was half the time =) YAY for no #milesofshame

      • I totally focus on one mile at a time. I’d never stay on if I really thought about how long I was going to be on there. LOL. I seriously count down the minutes until each mile is over!

    10. you are incredible! 18 miles on the mill? insanity! But I think that is so awesome and motivating and keeps me going…hoping to slowly ease into tacking on to my runs as I keep improving the ITBS issue – not 18 hehe, but one mile at a time, right?! I loved that Jeep commercial, it was really beautiful. I also loved the Doritos commercial 😉

      • I missed the Doritos commercial! UGH! Yes! 1 mile at a time. That’s what I had to tell myself repeatedly after Ryan was born. I so wanted to jump back into long runs but it’s so much smarter to listen to your body and take it slowly.

    11. Boom! That was an awesome 18-miler you got in! Way to go. Again, I am in awe of you people who can do a long run on the treadmill. Fingers crossed I can make it through the entire winter w/o having to step on it.

That game! Wow…I held my breath the entire final 4 minutes. Unbelievable. But very happy, obviously, with the outcome. My favorite commercial was the one where the lifeguard saves the girl and she then runs up into the arms of the astronaut. One of my running partners is an astrophysicist and we are always teasing her about NASA geeks, so this made me smile and think of her.

When can I have dinner at your mom’s house? ; )

      • Honestly, I give people like you so much more credit. The fact you ran in those super frigid temps (and long runs too) is mind boggling to me. I am good with high 20s…anything colder than that, and I wimp out =)

    12. Awesome RUN! I like the treadmill. It is a little bit annoying when I first get started, but about 3 miles in I zone out and just get them done. The new gym has tv’s on the treadmills, so that helps keep me entertained.

I liked the Clydesdales best (as did most people), the Dodge and Oprah’s tribute were good, and the rest fell a little short IMO. Maybe I had higher expectations than I should have haha?

      • TVs are a must!!!! Although when I was in Iraq, there were so many days that the TVs were not working (there was only 1 for about 20 treadmills anyway) so I learned how to zone out quickly! LOL.
I totally missed the clydesdale one – I missed a lot of them actually b/c I was focused on the two little ones so much! HA
Hope you had a great weekend! =)

      • HAHA. I fight with it too but I think that’s why I love it =) I also get to catch up on the shows I miss during the week!! Two birds with one stone =)
