Love Kills Cancer

A couple of months ago, I received the terrible news that Cami (Cameron) King, the 3 y/o daughter of one of my cousin’s, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).  Cami’s dad and I are first-cousins.  I grew up seeing her dad on a consistent basis and some of my fondest memories of family events involve playing baseball or basketball with her dad and his brothers.  Cami and her family live on Staten Island and I have been lucky enough to see her at family parties and holidays since she was born.

Nobody wishes cancer on anyone, but you especially can’t imagine someone so young and innocent having it.  My heart always aches when I see another family going through something like this, but I never imagined that it would affect someone in MY family.

Since her diagnosis in March, Cami has been fighting hard and undergoing chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC.  She has alternated between being in isolation in the hospital (she had the flu, then a cold) to being able to go home for a few weeks in between rounds of chemo.

She was fortunate enough to have a matching bone marrow donor come forward very quickly and is currently back home in order to rest up for the transplant that is scheduled to take place next week.

I saw her parents this past weekend and was SO impressed with how strong and positive they are in light of what they are going through.

Friends and family of Cami have organized two events in the coming weeks to help offset some of the large medical bills that her family is dealing with.  I wanted to share them here with you in case you lived close enough and/or wanted to take part.  If you can’t participate in either but feel inclined to donate, you can do so here.

    1. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming
having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% sure.
Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
      Many thanks

    2. I’d like to thank you for the efforts you have put in writing this website. I really hope to see the same high-grade content from you later on as well. In truth, your creative writing abilities has inspired me to get my very own site now 😉

    3. Please keep us updated on Cami’s progress. I hope the fundraising events are big successes.

Seeing my mom go through chemo, surgery and radiation this past year makes it that much harder to hear about children fighting cancer.

    4. SO glad a bone marrow donor came up so fast! That’s great! Sad that she’s going through this but she sounds like a trooper and you are all in my thoughts.

On another note, I have quite a few cousins that live in SI and I sent this to them so they can go tonight AND I’m going to sign up for the Shore Rd 5k! Hope to see you there!

    5. There are no words I can type to express how sad this makes me. But, you bet Cami, and your family are in my prayers.

    6. What an awful thing to be going through, but a wonderful way to fundraise and support Cami!
Have you ever heard of the organization Songs of Love? ( I’ve been volunteering for this organization with my family since I was 8 years old, they write and record personalized songs for sick children for free. It’s really great; Cami’s parents might have already heard about it at the hospital. Look into it if they haven’t, or I can tell you how to go about requesting a song and my family can write/record it!

    7. I’m so sorry to hear this. It breaks my heart to hear it happening to children. Please know that little Cami, her family, and the doctors are in my prayers. I would definitely go if I lived closer.

    10. I would be there in a heart beat if we lived close. Will do all I can to help promote Cami’s cause and her family. What we have gone through with Jack doesn’t compare to the battle they are fighting. My prayers are with them!

    11. I’m so sorry to hear about this but so glad she found a match. I work for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and there’s SO much our patient services department can do for her and her family…and they can help with copays too. Send me an email and I’d love to help however I can!! I HATE CANCER!! I’m raising money for LLS for IMLP and I can only hope it makes a difference in saving lives…there is so much promising research out there…so stay strong! All the best to Cami and her family. Sending lots of love.
