It’s officially RACE WEEK!! I am giddy with excitement about everything I am going to be able to do and people I will get to meet this weekend – there will be a post later this week with those details! I hope you are all staying as warm as possible with this cold weather and snow again. I promise to not rub it in (too much) that I will be in 70+ degree weather in a few days. =)

I’m in my second week of tapering for the LA Marathon (six days away!). This is the first time where I haven’t been counting down or felt beat by the time the taper hit – hopefully that means that I am rested and not worn out like I usually am come race day. Recap of last week’s training:

  • Monday: rest day
  • Tuesday: easy-paced 6 miles.
  • Wednesday: I wanted to do my tempo run outside, so despite the cold temps (with the wind it felt like 17 degrees), I bundled up and headed out. Two facts. First: It’s much harder (for me) to run fast outside then on the treadmill. I find it so much easier to do tempo and speed workouts on the treadmill and so I always try to do them a touch faster than I would do them if I were outside. I did 5 tempo miles (8 miles total) with splits ranging from 6:53-6:58. It wasn’t easy or fun. Second: I finished the run looking like this:

My tear ducts are sensitive (not sure if they are any more or less than the normal person) and flow freely when it’s windy or cold. So they were tearing the whole run and just began building icicles on my lashes. Kind of crazy. But also made me feel kind of like a bada$$.

  • Thur/Fri/Sat: I finished the week with 8 easy-paced miles on Thursday, an 8 mile steady state run on Friday (7:27 pace) and another easy-paced 8 miles on Saturday in my favorite capris from Athleta. I continued to do some core/strength work this past week but will eliminate the “extra” stuff this week in preparation for Sunday.

  • Sunday: last “workout” – 10 miles with first four warmup/easy and last six at what felt comfortable (close to steady state pace). Splits: 8:12, 7:49, 7:42, 7:37, 7:25, 7:23, 7:25, 7:22, 7:23, 7:19

—————–

More exciting than running, tapering and the LA Marathon, however, is the soon-to-be newest addition to our family! My husband and I have both been dog owners before (he grew up with dogs and I had a dog 10 years ago for a short period while I was in the Army) and we always knew we wanted to have a furry friend in our family. We’ve taken the boys to the pet store and shelter before to look and play with the dogs and felt it was a sign when we walked into the local shelter on Saturday and found this sweet, happy 3 y/0 Yorkie.

Willow, the newest member of our family!

She had just been brought to the shelter and hadn’t been tested yet, but we knew the moment we saw her that she was the one for us! She’s since passed all her tests and will be coming home with us Tuesday evening!

Dog or Cat Lover?

What distance do you run one week before a marathon? I ran 12 before the two marathons in the fall, but decided to cut back a bit to err on the side of caution this time.

I don’t post here every day, but I post all of my workouts (and other happenings) on Instagram on a daily basis {NYCRunningMama}.
