Weekend Happenings and Training Catch Up

Happy Monday!! I started off this morning with a 20+ mile run. Truth be told, I had initially planned on getting this run in yesterday but after a jam packed, fun and exhausting weekend, I made the decision to postpone it one day. I felt that it was better to get more sleep and recover from the weekend’s festivities before I put my body through any more stress.

I wanted the run to be outside which meant that the run had to happen before my husband had to go to work…which meant starting before 5am. That’s still a bit too early and dark to be running alone (for my liking) so I did the first 7 on the treadmill and then layered up (it was 38 degrees this morning!) and ran another 13.3 outside. I’m really happy with how consistent the splits were – 7:42 pace inside and 7:38 pace outside and with the exception of the first two miles of each, all miles were between 7:28-7:44.

The 20 miles also capped off a great week of training and a great weekend with family and friends:

Tuesday: 13.5 miles including 9 on treadmill in morning (8:01 pace) and 4.5 outside later that evening (8:12 pace)

Wednesday: 9 miles on treadmill (7:54 pace) + 30 min on trainer

Thursday: 13.1 miles on treadmill (7:19 pace). Tried a new workout that my friend Laura had recommended. It was a TOUGH Race Pace ladder workout that I adapted a bit (wanted it to be a little longer since I knew I wouldn’t be running for a few days).

  • 20 min warmup
  • 10 min at Current Marathon Pace (7:30)
  • 5 min at Goal Marathon Pace (7:13)
  • 5 min at Current Half Marathon Pace (6:58)
  • 5 min at Goal Half Marathon Pace (6:50)
  • 2 min at 10k Pace (6:40)
  • 2 min at 5k Pace (6:15)
  • 2 min at 10k Pace (6:40)
  • 5 min at Goal Half Marathon Pace (6:50)
  • 5 min at Current Half Marathon Pace (6:58)
  • 5 min at Goal Marathon Pace (7:13)
  • 10 min at Current Marathon Pace (7:30)
  • 10 min cooldown

Then I did 15 min at 7:13 and a fast finish last mile (6:35). I pushed myself a bit harder than I normally would/should for a workout towards the end of this workout, but I knew that I would have a few days to recover.

Friday + Saturday: OFF My beautiful sister got married this past weekend in NYC. I knew that the weekend would be hectic enough with spending a few nights in a hotel, attending events like the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, getting the boys ready for the wedding (my oldest was the ring bearer), getting hair and makeup done at my sister’s apartment, the actual wedding and reception and brunch the next morning. Lots of events, moving pieces and time with family and I just didn’t want to force running into the mix. So two happily planned rest days. The entire weekend from start to finish was amazing and my sister could not have looked any more gorgeous! Just a few pictures to share with you all!

Sunday: 8 miles outside (no garmin)

Total of 63.9 miles for the week on 5 days of running. This is also peak week for me – I have decided to run the NJ Marathon in 3 weeks!! So one more week of hard training and one more long run before the taper begins.

    8. I ran the nj marathon last year and liked the course a lot. Plus I qualified for Boston so it was my fav course so far :) tapering for Boston now and feeling excited, nervous and kind of slug-like but hope that’s just taper nerves. I’m still not sure how much/ when I need to taper, it seems like each training cycle is different and it drives me nuts! Your training sched/pace are inspiring!
