Back on My Feet in24 Philadelphia Entry Giveaway

I figured most of you don’t want to read about my first week of recovery post-marathon (lots of eating, laziness and cuddling with the boys…and then handful of runs I have done have been easy-paced and short). And so instead of boring you with those details, I am working on having a bunch of giveaways for you this week! Plus, it’s a fun way to celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend. =)

In 2010, I began training for what I planned to be my first ultra – the Back on My Feet in24 Philadelphia Race. There are a slew of different distances, but I had registered for the 24-hour one. My plan was to train for and run 50 miles and then call it a day. My family planned on traveling to Philly to cheer and since the course was an 8.4 mile loop on paved roads, they could get some chairs, relax and see me run by 6 or 7 times. Seemed like an awesome first ultra. I was a couple of months into my training and had just completed my first 30 mile training run when I found out I was pregnant. Best surprise but it meant no race that summer.

I was recently contacted by Back on My Feet to see if I was interested in participating in the 7th annual Stroehmann Back on My Feet in24 Philadelphia Race Challenge (in24 Philadelphia), held July 19-20th in Philadelphia, PA. My first instinct was a resounding “yes”. But the realistic side of me made me take a step back, write out a rough training plan (just the weekend long runs) and weigh the pros and cons. And sadly, it’s not in the cards for me this year. It came down to two main things. First and most importantly, a chat with my husband about the time requirements of training for such a long ultra. I just finished talking about how training for an Ironman or half Ironman would be too much of a time commitment (than I’m willing to make) and now I was looking at having weekends filled with 3-5 hour runs, sometimes on both days. And second, I reevaluated my goals for the year and this race doesn’t help me reach them (upcoming post on this soon!).

So although my heart really wanted to jump at this next challenge, it’s not the best time for me or my family. BUT, I’m thrilled that BOMF is giving me another entry that I can give away to one winner! Before I get to the giveaway entry, I want to highlight some of the details of the Race Weekend

Date: July 19-20

– Location/Course: 8.4 mile loop around Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River Running Loop – I’ve run portions of several races (RnR Philly Half, Philly Marathon) on this loop and really love it!

course map

Race Distance: Choice of TWO (the 24-hour ultra and 24 hour relay are not available for the giveaway!):

  • Midnight Madness – one 8.4 mile loop at midnight (12:00am on July 20): “We encourage runners to wear glow paint, lights, flash lights, and glow sticks to light up the race and for a chance to win a prize”
  • Finale 5k – 3.1 mile loop at 8am on July 20

Purpose: Race raises money for Back on My Feet:

” Back on My Feet (BoMF) is a national for-purpose 501(c)3 organization that uses running to help those experiencing homelessness change the way they see themselves so they can make real change in their lives that results in employment and independent living. The organization’s mission is not to create runners within the homeless population, but to use running to create self-sufficiency in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. The program’s success is measured by how many Members achieve independence through employment and housing.” Source

– It is the organization’s largest national fundraiser helping to support the national operation and eleven chapter cities nationwide. In 2013, in24 Philadelphia raised almost $300,000 for Back on My Feet (source).

    4. I would choose the Midnight Madness. I travel for a living and LOVE running in Philly when I can. I’ve actually run this loop, so it would be fun to do it at night!

    6. I love that part of the RnR Philly Half! It is just so calming. I think the night time run would be fun! But being realistic, if I won, I’d do the 5K because I’m not up to 8 miles, nor will I be by then. Pretty cool race! Maybe I’ll fathom doing the ultra one day!

    7. I love this so much for so many reasons: I’ve been looking for fun midnight runs and haven’t heard of this one! Sounds so exciting. And the 8.4 distance sounds too prefect: just enough but not too much.
I also appreciate that you’re strong enough to realize what makes sense to you at this point in time. Hope your training goes well!

    8. This sounds SO FUN but along the same lines as your inability to do the 24-hour, this just doesn’t work for me or my family either :( I will be about 3 weeks post-partum at that point so no races for me yet. I hope the winner has an awesome time, though!! I have run that course many times too (RnR 1/2, ODDyssey 1/2, and Philly 26.2) and it’s great!

    9. I’d love to run a race in Philly – this one looks like a gorgeous route!

    10. THAT’S MY BDAY WKND!!!! I have been looking for a race that is semi close to do on my 32nd birthday…. I would do the Mid Night madness race! I’ve never done a night run and I think it would be amazing… what beeter way to celebrate my bday;)
