Sometimes You Just Need a Change…

So, if you follow me on IG, you probably have seen me mention a new coach. Switching coaches was not a decision that came lightly to me. Coach Hadley had been my coach for two years and I really blossomed under his tutorage. I PRd in every distance I raced – from the mile to the 5k to the half marathon to the marathon.

So it may seem backwards that I changed coaches. (Note: I first decided to take a break from coaching. But after 3-4 weeks, I realized how much I missed the guidance, and direction that a coach provides. And so I felt like it was the right time to switch.) There were several reasons why I felt like it was a road I needed to take.

First, I felt like training had become a bit monotonous. Coach Hadley has a specific training outlook and consequently, my training plan from cycle to cycle was pretty identical. There were minor changes – more tempo miles, an extra mile for a long run. But the shell was the same. This resulted in several things. After two years of similar plans, I felt like I could predict the workouts, paces and plan, I felt like I was always comparing myself to a previous workour or cycle and most importantly, it was no longer fun and exciting.

    Should You Hire a Running Coach?

    Over the last year (and especially the last few months), I’ve been asked a lot about my experience with having a coach – what the benefits are, what I get out of it and whether I would recommend a coach to another runner.

    Let me preface this whole post by saying that this is not meant to be a sales pitch for me. Yes, I coach. But I truly believe that you have to find the right coach for you. And I know that just because you read here or follow me on social media, doesn’t mean I am the right one for you!

    I think the benefits to having a coach are extremely specific for each runner. You might be looking for a coach to:

    – push you out of your comfort zone to run faster
    – help increase your weekly mileage in a safe and healthy way
    – tell you to slow down
    – help you become a stronger racer
    – work on nutrition and fueling
    – lose weight or reach a more optimal racing weight
    – hold you accountable to your training plan
    – help determine a realistic goal for a race – and the best pacing plan to hit that goal

      Happy Friday!! Thank you so much for all of your comments and words of encouragement on yesterday’s post!  I’m getting ready to head up to West Point for the weekend – it’s my 10 year reunion and I will be spending quality time with some of my closest girl friends ! There is a dinner/social tonight followed by a parade, lunch in the mess hall, and football game on Saturday.  Sunday morning I will be racing the SI Half Marathon – I’ve done this race twice before and am excited to be running in my hometown again. I’m hoping for a PR, but it’s not the easiest course, so will be satisfied with a steady effort and strong finish!

      Lots of racing going on this weekend – including my triathlon coach, Marni and running coach, Katie who will be tackling Kona (the race I discussed yesterday) and the Hartford Marathon, respectfully.  Are you racing this weekend??


      I am excited to share my good friend, Sarah’s, running story with you. We became acquainted through twitter/blogs a couple of years ago and became really close last year. We were due on the same day with our second baby and shared pregnancy, postpartum, and running stories.         10k Training Club

        Ever wish you had someone to train with? Or that you have someone that runs your pace? Wish you could afford a running coach? Want to improve, but reached a plateau?

        If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. Amanda (Run to the Finish) and I are contacted by readers who are dealing with some of these issues.  Because of that, we’ve decided to organize and host a 10K training club.

        Amanda and I have teamed up to bring you encouragement, training plans, support and advice! The 10K is long enough to challenge yourself but short enough to not have to dedicate long training days to reach your goal.

        Regardless of what you are looking for – to lose weight, finish your first 10k or go after a PR, the 10k Training Club has a training plan for you.

        What’s Included in the 10K Training Club

          • 10K – First Finish {great for walkers, run/walkers or first time 10K runners}

          • 10K – Fat Blaster {mixing in more strength and intervals to blast fat and cross the finish line}
          • 10K – PR Crusher {you’ve finished a few 10K’s and just need a plan/advice/team to get your running to the next level}
